All seawater cultured pearls are created using the same basic procedure as pioneered by the Japanese early last century.
Mikimoto originally used wild oysters fished from the seas around Ise by female "Ama" divers clad in white outfits. Their collections of Akoya oyster deposited in over-sized wooden buckets left floating on the surface whilst they gathered below.
Today, baby oysters known as Spat can be bred in tanks in laboratories, known as hatcheries, specifically for pearl culturing. The environment is strictly controlled and of course the larvae are free from predators.
